As you know, truckers spend so much time on the road that it is crucial they know how to handle all of the road conditions that are thrown their way. The weather can change in an instant and with that comes the increased possibility of accidents. In order to stay safe on the road, we wanted to provide you with some helpful tips based on the different weather conditions.

Tips based on road conditions:

  1. Freezing rain
  2. Snow
  3. High winds
  4. Fog

Freezing rain

The best way to tell if rain is going to freeze is to keep a visible temperature gauge in your rig. This will help you predict when the rain is going to turn to freezing rain. Once the rain changes over, it is in your best interest to get off of the road. Since it is impossible to see the icy spots/ black ice on the road you can’t prepare yourself for when you should slow down. Find a place you can pull off (preferably a rest stop) and stay there until the weather conditions improve.

Snow

No matter how many times it has snowed, there always seems to be an accident once the snowfall hits the ground. Drivers seem to be unprepared for the snow, which puts you in danger as well. Have your tire chains ready if you have to keep trucking. You should also be prepared when it comes to other supplies such as a full gas tank, hand warmers, winter gear (hat, coat, gloves, blankets), food, and boots. The goal is to stay safe until help arrives if you were to experience a breakdown or accident.

High winds

When it’s time for high winds, it’s time for you to get off the road. The high winds are not good for big rigs like yours. The winds will cause your truck to waiver back and forth which is dangerous with other smaller cars on the road. Seek the nearest rest stop to park. If you can, try parking by other trailers that can help block some of the wind.

Fog

Fog makes it impossible to see within so many feet in front of you (depending on how dense the fog is). If the fog is making it too hard for you to see, we recommend pulling off on the nearest exit. Stopping on the side of the road isn’t always the best option – because other drivers may not see you until it’s too late.
