If you are thinking about becoming a truck driver or know of someone who is, odds are you know about the commercial driver license, or CDL as everyone calls it. Before you even take your permit exam, there are some things you should be aware of if you would like to obtain your CDL.

  • There are 3 classes of CDL licenses:
    • Class A – This classifies as any combination of vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more.
    • Class B – Any single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 lbs. or more, or any vehicle towing a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating that is not more than 10,000 lbs.
    • Class C – Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that is not a Class A or Class B vehicle, but designed to transport 16 or more passengers which includes the driver, or one that is carrying hazardous materials, or any school bus with a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 26,001 lbs. that is designed to hold less than 16 people including the driver.
    • Class C CDL allows you to drive vehicles in Class A or Class B if you have the correct endorsements.
  • In order to obtain a CDL you will need to pay a fee of $50. Here is a breakdown of what the $50 is for:
    • $10 for the pre-trip inspection
    • $10 for the off-road maneuvering
    • $30 for the on-road portion of the test
    • An applicant who schedules an appointment with the highway patrol may be required to pay an additional appointment fee of $50. You may visit the Ohio BMV website.
  • You must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license. Important note: your employer could enforce additional criteria or a higher age requirement.
    • You must bring your social security card to prove your identity.
  • All commercial drivers must meet the minimum medical standards by the federal and state rules and regulations.
  • The applicant must be binocular, achieve at least a 20/40 in each eye with or without glasses or contacts, and must meet the acuity, horizontal, and color test fields.
  • It’s going to be a challenge. You’re going to have to take practice tests. There is a lot of material to be covered, and you will need, and want, to be prepared.
    • There are hundreds of free CDL practice tests online by doing a simple Google search.

These are the requirements for Ohio, and may differ from state to state. Also, your employer could have more requirements for your future potential career as a truck driver, so you will want to ask them what they require before you schedule your exam. Some companies may even pay for the training and test if they feel you are a strong fit. This may be a lot of information; however, once you complete and pass the CDL, you will be on the road to a secure future as a truck driver, so it is worth it.
