When you think of gaining a CDL, what do you think of? For most people, the first thought that comes to mind OTR (over-the-road) trucking. While most people start in the trucking industry to begin OTR driving, there are several other job options for those who have obtained a CDL.
Most truck drivers start out as OTR drivers; however, once drivers have been driving OTR for a while, there are ways to move up if that isn’t something you see yourself doing for the rest of your life. These jobs may not all require a CDL; however, it is helpful if you have one because you may have a better chance of getting the job over someone who doesn’t have a CDL if you have the experience. Recruiters are the ones who bring prospective truck drivers into the trucking company.
Local/Regional Driver
Local truck drivers work in shifts and are home every night. Regional drivers are typically gone during the week and are able to come home on weekends.
Terminal Manager
Truck terminal managers oversee terminal operations. Their duties may include coordinating freight, paperwork, assigning responsibilities to employees, and communicating with customers.
Delivery Driver
Delivery drivers transport goods from one place to another, whether that is food, small packages, etc.
Dispatcher
Dispatchers are those “behind the scenes” making sure everything runs smoothly, from checking that truck drivers have cargo to making sure they are on time and en route to their destinations. Road experience is not necessary; however, strong communication skills are important.
Human Services Transportation
This includes public transport options like airport shuttles, school buses, and city buses.
Construction Services Transportation
Those who possess a Class B CDL can be qualified to operate construction equipment like cement mixers, bulldozers, and forklifts. Larger equipment such as cranes and trailer tractors require a Class A CDL.
