If you’re new to the trucking industry, you may have heard of a DAC report but might not fully understand its importance. Your Drive-A-Check (DAC) report serves as your professional record in the trucking world, much like a credit report does for financial matters. Carriers rely heavily on DAC reports when making hiring decisions, especially for experienced drivers.
Understanding and monitoring your DAC report is essential for protecting your reputation, maintaining employment opportunities, and ensuring accuracy in your records.
What is a DAC Report?
A DAC report is a detailed employment history file for commercial truck drivers, compiled by HireRight, a company specializing in background checks. This report helps trucking companies assess potential hires based on their past performance and compliance.
What’s Included in a DAC Report?
Work history, including past employers
The reason for leaving or being terminated from previous jobs
The type of truck and trailer operated
Accident and safety history
Drug and alcohol testing results
Legal violations and driving infractions
Whether the driver is eligible for rehire
Because of its comprehensive nature, a DAC report can make or break your trucking career. A positive report can open doors to better opportunities, while a negative one can limit your job prospects.
Why Your DAC Report Matters
Your DAC report is as important as your credit score when applying for a job in trucking. Many carriers review a driver’s DAC, Motor Vehicle Report (MVR), and even credit history to determine if they are a safe and reliable candidate.
Understanding Your MVR (Motor Vehicle Report)
The first section of your DAC report includes your MVR, which is a record of your CDL driving history in your home state. Traffic violations stay on your record for at least three years, and most trucking companies require:
No more than two minor violations
No serious violations (or risk of CDL suspension)
Maintaining a clean driving record is crucial for keeping job opportunities open and protecting your CDL.
How to Check and Dispute Your DAC Report
Just like your credit report, your DAC report should be monitored regularly to ensure accuracy. Mistakes happen, and incorrect information could cost you a job opportunity.
How to Get Your DAC Report:
Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you’re entitled to one free DAC report per year. Additional copies are available for $9.50 each. You can request a copy directly from HireRight by calling 1-800-381-0645.
How to Dispute Errors on Your DAC Report:
If you find incorrect, incomplete, or misleading information, you have the right to file a formal dispute through HireRight. To challenge any discrepancies, you’ll need a report no older than 60 days when submitting your dispute.
