DAC – you may be wondering what this is. If you’re new to the trucking industry, you should already be familiar with the DAC report. When hiring a new driver, a carrier will place very high value on this report, except for when hiring recent truck driving school graduates. It will essentially be your lifeline for your trucking career.

The DAC stands for “Drive-A-Check” and is a detailed employment history file. DACs provide a detailed summary of:

  • A truck driver’s work history
  • Why a driver left a job or why he or she was fired
  • Information such as the type of truck and trailer he or she operated
  • Driving accidents
  • Legal transgressions
  • Drug and alcohol history
  • If the driver is eligible for rehire

The DAC is as important as a person’s consumer credit report. A DAC report, MVR (Motor Vehicle Report), and your credit history will be examined by many employers to ensure you are a worthy candidate for employment, not just limited to job opportunities where a CDL is required.

The first part of your DAC report is your MVR, which is simply your CDL driving record from your home state. Every moving violation stays on your record for 3+ years and most companies require no more than 2 non-serious traffic violations on your record, so it does pay to contest every citation. 2 or more serious violations means a suspended license and a loss of a driving career for awhile. The second, and most requested, part of the DAC report is your work history, including the detailed summary of everything listed above and everything your former employers have reported about you.

A company specializing in providing background checks for several industries known as HireRight compiles and provides DAC reports. HireRight operates within Fair Credit Reporting Act regulations.

It is essential to monitor your DAC report just as you would your credit report. Under the FACT Act, you are entitled to receive a free DAC report copy once a year. Additional copies are available for $9.50 each if needed. An important part of your job as a truck driver is to examine your DAC report periodically to check for any inaccurate, incomplete, or missing information. If there is information you would like to correct, you can file a formal dispute through HireRight. If you do need to make a dispute, you need a copy no older than 60 days. Contact HireRight with any questions at 1-800-381-0645.
