If you are a new driver, you still have a lot to learn. But, knowledge comes with experience. Depending on the time of the year, you may experience some delays or get stuck in cities that you weren’t planning on staying in for long periods of time. That is why it’s important to be prepared or pack extras in case of emergencies.
Must-haves for your next haul:
- Emergency kit
- Food
- Clothes
- Extra hygiene items
- Items to help you stay warm
Emergency kit
Depending on what the current weather conditions are you could need a variety of things in your emergency kit. Some of the essentials are flashlights, batteries, bandaids, gloves, tools, medications, flares, non-perishable foods, blankets, and so on. It’s best to carry these items with you at all times because you may not always be close to a gas station or rest area if an emergency occurs.
Food
When thinking about emergency situations you want to carry extra food with you that does not perish or expire quickly. Bring things like nuts, peanut butter, soup, water, candy, and things that are individually wrapped so they do not spoil or get stale before use.
Clothes
Depending on how long you are broke down you may need extra clothes to change into or you may just need them to keep you warm. Having backups in your truck will help you when you least expect it.
Extra hygiene items
The essentials like deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, and shampoo are all more important than you think — especially when you don’t have any to use.
Items to help you stay warm
Extra coats, gloves, hats, blankets, and hand warmers are all great things to have in your trucks when you are on the go. It may seem silly to pack things you don’t need but you don’t want to end up in a bad situation wishing you had your winter gear.
There are tricks of the trade-in every industry and some tricks you will learn as you go. Don’t think that you know everything about trucking right out the gate, but know that you will become a lifelong learner about how to do things the right way.
